So long as your property has access to natural gas, a gas central heating system is likely to be your cheapest option. Although older gas boilers were inefficient, newer models have improved significantly.
However, if sustainability is your priority, or if you don’t have access to natural gas, then you may want to consider electric heating, liquified petroleum gas or oil.
Central heating boilers work by heating water and then pumping that water to radiators as well as providing hot water to taps when required. Below we explain the three most common types of central heating boiler; Regular, Combi and System.
These boilers utilise a cold-water tank (normally in the loft space) and a hot water tank/cylinder. Because a large quantity of water is kept hot for a long time, a large amount of hot water is available on demand. But, for the same reason, these boilers can be less efficient as storing hot water means energy loss. The more water stored, the more energy lost.
Combi boilers heat water on demand. They are also normally quite small and can be more efficient than regular boilers. There disadvantage is that only so much water can be heated on demand which can be a problem, particularly when hot water is needed in several places at the same time.
System boilers are similar to combi boilers but also have a hot water tank. Essentially the try to take advantage of both the other boiler types.
In general, combi-boilers are more suited to smaller homes while system boilers are best for larger homes with more than one bathroom. Regular boilers sit somewhere in the middle. However, every application is different and there are other factors which may need to be taken into account. A qualified heating engineer will be able to review your specific requirements and advise you of the best options available and of the likely costs.
